About Us

The Zakat Fund of NYC was established in 2016 to collect and distribute Zakat in NYC annually. We connect with the underserved members of the community to provide direct financial assistance and referrals for individuals and families struggling to pay their rent, utilities, and medical debt.

Zakat Fund of NYC seeks to help those who are facing food and shelter insecurities, as well as those who have experienced incidents of domestic violence. In the longer term, we support them to gain access to community resources required to achieve sustainable economic independence.

The Zakat Fund of NYC has developed partnerships across NYC to support its work:

Islamic Center at NYU - The Islamic Center at NYU (ICNYU( is one of the most active and dynamic Muslim communities in the United States. The ICNYU is a partner organization that helps connect community members to various programs supported by the Zakat Fund of NYC. Through a weekly food distribution program managed by ICNYU the Zakat Fund of NYC has distributed over 15,000 meals to food insecure New Yorkers.

New York Community Trust - The Zakat Fund of NYC supports existing organizations in NYC through a donor-advised fund at New York Community Trust (NYCT).  NYCT, the community foundation for the NYC region, is one of the largest and oldest community foundations in the country and is the largest community trust in NYC dedicated to improving the lives of residents of New York City.  Through the relationship with NYCT, the Zakat Fund of NYC benefits from the services of professional grant-making, financial and investment staff of a $2 billion institution.
